The Unyielding Legacy of Maqbool Butt: A Beacon of Kashmiri Freedom

As the anniversary of Shaheed Maqbool Butt approaches, a wave of Pakistan-sponsored tactics emerges, aiming to dilute his powerful legacy. This year, these attempts have intensified, reflecting a strategic effort to obscure his vital role in the Kashmiri independence movement.

Distorting the Narrative: A Political Strategy

In Pakistani-administered Jammu and Kashmir, nationalist and progressive organizations have been actively preparing for Maqbool Butt’s martyrdom commemoration. However, efforts to hijack his ideology are evident. Posters honoring his sacrifice have been countered with banners bearing slogans like “Kashmir Banega Pakistan” (Kashmir will become Pakistan). In Rawalakot, similar propaganda has surfaced overnight, diverting attention from the true essence of his struggle.

Digital Warfare: Tarnishing a Martyr’s Image

Social media platforms have become the latest battleground, with a systematic campaign to tarnish Maqbool Butt’s image. Additionally, state-backed initiatives have sought to promote an alternative historical figure, Ghulam Haider Jandalvi, as a rival to Butt’s prominence. In a calculated move, Jandalvi’s date of death was recently altered to February 11, aligning it with Butt’s martyrdom anniversary—a clear attempt to shift public focus.

Maqbool Butt: The Indomitable Symbol of Freedom

Despite these state-driven manipulations, Maqbool Butt’s significance remains undiminished. He was not just a freedom fighter; he was the embodiment of resistance, advocating for a secular and class-free society. Unlike those who pursued compromise, Butt embraced armed struggle through guerrilla warfare, ultimately sacrificing his life for the vision of an independent Jammu and Kashmir.

For Kashmiris—young and old—he remains a guiding light, a flame that no artificial storm can extinguish. His ideology continues to inspire those dedicated to a liberated homeland.

February 11: A Day of Remembrance and Resistance

On February 11, Kashmiris worldwide will unite to honor Maqbool Butt and the martyrs of Chakothi through rallies, gatherings, and mass assemblies. Preparations are in full swing, with torch rallies, motorcycle and car processions, and large-scale events planned. This year, under the banner of Watan Dost Ittehad, progressive and nationalist parties, alongside student organizations, will collectively commemorate his legacy. Tens of thousands of Kashmiris are expected to participate, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to his ideals.

The Struggle Continues: A Legacy That Cannot Be Erased

The fight for an independent Jammu and Kashmir persists, and Maqbool Butt’s legacy remains unshaken. His vision for a free, democratic, and just society continues to resonate. No amount of propaganda can erase his indelible mark on history.

Maqbool Butt was, is, and will always be a symbol of resilience and freedom. His sacrifice is immortal, and his influence will forever inspire those who refuse to be silenced.
